The ARTS & LANDMARKS COMMITTEE (A&L) advocates for the full integration of the arts into the public school curriculum, K-12, and the preservation of New York City’s architectural and cultural heritage including historic structures and districts as well as works of art in public places.

2007 – 2008 PRIORITIES

JOIN THE A&L COMMITTEE
• The Committee recruits and engages WCC members to further the work of the Arts & Landmarks Committee.

PRESERVATION & DEVELOPMENT ISSUES
• The Committee monitors the work of the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
• As appropriate, the Committee testifies on behalf of the LPC budget before the City Council.
• In collaboration with preservation groups, the Committee responds in an appropriate way to preservation and development issues as they arise throughout the year.
• After identifying areas of interest, the A&L Committee invites speakers to provide the background information needed for its members to become effective advocates.

ARTS EDUCATION IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL CURRICULUM
• The Committee advocates for arts education in the public school curriculum and monitors the New York City Department of Education’s (DOE) response to such efforts. Periodically, speakers from the DOE are invited to committee meetings.
