Equity Starts with Women: A Message from WCC to NYC's Next Mayor
On behalf of Women Creating Change (WCC), Sharon Sewell-Fairman, President and CEO, released the following statement regarding the 2025 mayoral election.
"We urge Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and his incoming administration to focus on the key issues affecting women, who make up 52 percent of the city’s population.
Economic inequality, pay inequity, and childcare access, highlighted at WCC's State of NYC Women Conference last month, shape the daily lives of women and families across the boroughs. Women in NYC still earn 8 percent less than men - 23 percent less for women of color. Childcare costs often rival rent.
At WCC, we stand ready to work with NYC leadership to advance equity and opportunity for all New Yorkers.
We urge the next administration to:
• Close persistent pay gaps and address the undervaluation of women’s labor, especially for women of color.
• Invest in universal childcare as essential infrastructure for economic mobility.
• Enforce pay equity across public and nonprofit sectors and adopt a “true cost of living” framework in city budgeting.
By centering the needs of the majority of New Yorkers, the city can strengthen civic participation and build a more inclusive and equitable future for all."
