• GAS DRILLING: After securing an extension for public comments on proposed gas drilling in the shale formation beneath NYC’s water sources, WCC implored NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation to prohibit hydraulic fracturing, a risky method of drilling.
• HEALTH CARE REFORM: Thanked U.S. Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand for voting to keep abortion legal, safe and accessible.
• IMMIGRANT RIGHTS: Endorsed the DREAM Act, which provides a path to legal status for many immigrant young people who have grown up in the U.S. and complete two years of college or serve in the military.
• HOMELESSNESS: Urged Governor to revise punitive and counterproductive shelter ejection rules for homeless families and individuals.
• ELECTIONS: Testified in support of a new voting system for future elections in NYC.
• GREEN BUILDINGS: Advocated for legislation that would enhance energy efficiency of NYC buildings, which City Council subsequently approved.
• HEALTH CARE DECISIONS: Called on NY Assembly Speaker Silver to bring Family Health Care Decisions Act to a vote following Senate’s unanimous passage of the bill, which allows New Yorkers to act as health care surrogates to loved ones unable to make their own medical decisions.
