Ruth E, Acker, President of the Women’s City Club of New York, has included in her responsibilities the successful organization of the Civic Spirit Awards and Silent Auction. The 19th Annual Civic Spirit Awards Dinner took place on April 16, 2008 at the Manhattan Penthouse. The Civic Spirit Awards are WCC's way of publicly recognizing and honoring corporations, organizations, individuals and institutions that have demonstrated a commitment to social responsibility in addressing the civic and social needs of the community. In 2008, the WCC honored Julie Menin, Founder of Wall Street Rising and Chair of Community Board #1; Maestro Vincent La Selva, Conductor and Founder, New York Grand Opera Company; and, Janice Weinman Shorenstein, WCC Member and President of K.I.D.S. - Kids in Distressed Situations. G. Angela Henry, WCC member and Principal, Phillips Oppenheim emcee'd the event. (Baskets of non-perishable food served as centerpieces and were contributed to the West Side Food Pantry after the event.)
